Transgender youth suffer high rates of physical and sexual abuse, and homelessness. In this session, I will discuss minority stress, and how misgendering transgender, or gender nonconforming youth is a minority stressor, and the impacts that has on their mental health and felt stigma. We will discuss ways in which we can decrease these stressors for this vulnerable population within child abuse investigations. We will discuss the importance of referring transgender youth and their families to trans-friendly medical and mental health providers, and how we can adjust our language and one-on-one interactions to best serve the needs of these children.
1. Participants should leave this session with an understanding of how misgendering someone can affect their mental health, increase felt stigma, and contribute to minority stress.
2. Participants should leave this session understanding the importance of institutional support for transgender, and gender nonconforming youth.
